A constant push ~ pull for me is bouncing between the comfort and ease of improving known designs for steady progress vs. recklessly jumping into exploration with hopes of creating something insane and setting a new standard. For every variable of a surfboard, there is a relationship to some other variable, whether it be design or materials or something else. We can push on one area, pull on another and end up with relatively similar results. Or, we can throw the kitchen sink at it and open up a totally new world of sensation. As I bounce between pushing and pulling, steady and wild, I realize the one never-ending constant is, and always will be, a full commitment to the Body of Work and to every aspect of the board we can think of. In the end, surfing is rad and it is the Reason. It's the push AND pull. It’s the steady improvement. It’s the wild leaps. It’s riding waves. It’s being in the ocean. It’s sitting and doing nothing. It’s being patient and aggressive all compiled into one fantastic lifelong game. I love making the boards that let people go surfing.
